In standard PDF cropping, the content outside the crop box is hidden but technically still present in the file. Content outside the crop box is hidden rather than deleted, which means it could theoretically be recovered with advanced PDF tools. For content you need permanently removed (sensitive data, confidential markings), use our Redact PDF tool instead, which irreversibly deletes the underlying content from the file structure.

Yes — that is what the Auto-crop button does. It reads the page, works out where the content actually sits, and snaps the crop box tight around it, so you never have to judge the edges by eye or work out any numbers. It handles scans as well as text pages: where there is no real text to measure, it finds the ink on the image instead.

What comes back is a starting rectangle rather than a finished decision. The box stays draggable, so you can loosen or tighten it before cropping. And on a page with no clear margin to remove, it says so and leaves your selection exactly where you put it rather than resetting your work.

Crop values are given in points, and there are 72 points to an inch — so a standard A4 page is 595 points wide and 842 tall. A book scanned flat on a glass bed typically leaves a dark strip down the binding side and a band of platen lid at the head. If that gutter measures roughly half an inch, 36 points off the appropriate side removes it. Take one measurement from a ruler held against a printout, convert once, and apply the same figures across the file rather than guessing per page.

Nothing went wrong — that is what cropping is. Trimming a page moves the boundary that says which part of the sheet to display; the drawing instructions for the area outside it are still sitting in the file, and any application that ignores or resets that boundary will show them again. Some print drivers do exactly this and put the untrimmed page on paper. If a program insists on showing the full sheet, it is reading the file correctly and your expectation of what crop does needs adjusting.

No, and this is the one mistake worth being emphatic about. Because the content outside the boundary is retained rather than deleted, anyone who widens the boundary again — or simply copies the text out — recovers exactly what you thought you had removed. Cropping hides; it does not delete. For anything that must not survive, use Redact PDF, which removes the underlying content from the file. Crop is for margins and whitespace, never for secrets.

Barely, if at all, and it is worth knowing why before you use it for that purpose. The instructions that draw the trimmed-away region remain in the document, so a cropped page carries essentially the same data as before — you have changed which part of it is shown, not how much of it there is. Occasionally a file even grows fractionally because a new boundary value is recorded on every page. If size is the actual problem, Compress PDF is the tool that addresses it.
