In most cases, yes. The converter preserves fonts that are embedded in the DOCX file. If your document uses a font that is installed on your machine but not embedded in the file, the converter substitutes a closely matched system font — which may cause minor spacing differences. To guarantee exact font reproduction, embed fonts in Word before uploading: File → Options → Save → check "Embed fonts in the file".

Because a Word file is a set of instructions for laying out a page, and it is re-laid-out on whatever machine opens it. A CV that fits one page on your screen can spill onto a second on a machine with different fonts installed, and a contract can lose a page break in the middle of a clause. Converting fixes the layout before it leaves you, so what the reader sees is what you approved. It also stops anyone changing the wording without effort, which is the other half of why formal documents travel as PDFs.

The document used a typeface that was installed on your machine but not stored inside the file, so the converter substituted the nearest available match — and a substitute of a different width pushes every line along, which is why the damage shows up as spacing rather than as obviously wrong letters. The fix is on the Word side before you convert: File, then Options, then Save, and tick the option to embed fonts in the file. Re-save, convert again, and the metrics travel with the document.

Sending a PDF to someone who needs to track changes or fill in sections forces them to convert it back, and a round trip costs more formatting than it saves — send the original file instead. Also skip it if the document is bound for long-term storage under a records policy: an ordinary PDF is not an archival one, and you want PDF to PDF/A for that, either instead of this step or immediately after it.

What changes is that the styles which described how to build the page — heading levels, paragraph rules, automatic numbering — are resolved into a fixed appearance, so a heading still looks like a heading but is no longer tagged as one you can restyle.
